RE-SKIN – Renewable and Environmental-Sustainable Kit for building Integration

The aim of the project, which involves 21 partners from 11 EU countries, is to develop an integrated, multifunctional system capable of transforming an existing energy-intensive building into a modern, efficient and sustainable structure over its entire life cycle. Through the use of ICT technologies (for energy control and management), renewable energy sources (hybrid photovoltaic-thermal collectors), sustainable materials and components (bio-based, recycled and recyclable) and high-efficiency systems (state-of-the-art heat pumps and fan coil units), the system offers a holistic and systemic solution for deep renovation as well as smart energy retrofit of residential, commercial and public buildings. A cloud-based platform, which represents the “heart” of the system, will be able to interconnect and control subsystems, interact with the climate context and the National Grid, and interface with various stakeholders (end-users, maintenance technicians and energy managers) to optimise the overall energy performance. The system will be installed and tested in pilot buildings in Italy, Bulgaria, France and Spain.

The activities, coordinated by Prof. Niccolò Aste, started in January 2023 under the coordination of the Department of Architecture, Built Environment and Construction Engineering, supported by DIG, DASTU and DEIB departments of Politecnico di Milano.

The project is funded under the topic:

HORIZON-CL5-2021-D4-02-02 – Cost-effective, sustainable multi-functional and/or prefabricated holistic renovation packages, integrating RES and including re-used and recycled materials (Built4People)
